Early Literacy

Early Literacy

Here at BCLD our storytimes are designed to serve children and their grown-ups.  We follow the Every Child Ready to Read practices to help children get ready to read and to demonstrate how grown-ups can use the five practices in their everyday life.  The five practices we encourage include:

Read
Talk
Sing
Write
Play

We support early literacy within the library as well as encouraging and supporting caregivers to make early literacy part of their everyday lives.  We hope to send the message that reading will enrich your entire life and is fun for kids and grown-ups!

Kids

Before third grade, kids learn to read.  After third grade, they read to learn.  For kids, our programing strives to spark their interests and help them feed their curiosity with books and other media.  We also strive to bring out their natural creativity and ingenuity with our library programs.

Teens

Our teen programs are designed to support some of the 40 assets identified by the Search institute.   The institute claims that the assets described benefit young people regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic backgrounds.
